Fairground

Fairground

Leonardo Multiplicatorproject "Fairground"

The “fairground” project (1997-1999) was designed to disseminate the results of the PETRA  project B41-NL49
“Improving and innovating vocational education for children of occupational travellers” (fairground people)  in order to create opportunities for initial vocational training for young adults from fairgrounds.  It will create a greater awareness of continuing vocational education for fairground people and encourage lifelong learning through:

  • translation of the modules developed in the PETRA project into English.
  • evaluation of the materials and methodologies and adaptation of the modules to meet technological changes, requirements of UK and Irish legislation, and developments in distance learning techniques
  • support to Education Liaison Officers from the showmen’s professional organisations in their promotion of the use of the materials throughout their sector to students, parents and educational establishments.
  • training trainers in the use of the modules developed through the PETRA project and in the values and lifestyles of the fairground people.
  • dissemination of the results of the project to the widest audience possible including the Showmen’s professional organisations, key operators in the training of fairground people and travellers in the Member States, to the European Showmen's Union and the EFECOT members.

This is how we did it.

The original “PETRA” training materials were developed by a partnership formed between Apeldoorns College and Argo (now GO!) with the collaboration of EFECOT and were funded by the EU, under the aegis of the “PETRA” programme.

Originally aimed at empowering fairground people and to help them gain qualifications, our LEONARDO project seeks to disseminate the materials more widely, piloting them with a variety of disadvantaged groups in a variety of different countries and training environments.

In using the “PETRA” training materials, it was anticipated that all the organisations/partners involved in the project will be involved in adopting, adapting and augmenting the materials to suit the needs of their target groups and it is hoped that in some cases the format of the text based materials can be modified to make them available on computer disk and CD Rom.
